Recreational Center Oudenaarde - Our Lady Hospital
After completing the build of a new hospital, the 13th-century clinical monastery fell into disuse. Its sheer size and proximity to the city centre inspired the city of Oudenaarde to restore the old chapel and hospital wings and convert the entire complex into a new Recreation Center. The building is thus returned to the public, inviting local associations and clubs to organize a wide range of activities in its historical chambres.
In keeping with the original character and purpose of the monastery, new interventions are implemented only where necessary and re-introduce the idea of the clean and clinical. Glossy surfaces and light, framed furniture counter the theatrical heaviness of the existing features. A somewhat odd yet honest opposition that allows for a historical reading of the monastery, as it is about to begin yet another chapter.
